Freshman CJ Tibbling showed out on Saturday night, netting two goals as the Pirates shut out Marquette 2-0 for their first Big East victory of the season.
Tibbling got the party started early, as he struck in just the third minute on a shot from outside the penalty area that found the back of the net to give the Pirates the early lead. The shot deflected off a Marquette defender but still found its way past Golden Eagles’ goalkeeper Luis Barraza.
The Pirates would continue their offensive push at the start of the second half, as Tibbling made a run through a flurry of Marquette defenders and tucked one in the far post for his second goal of the night. The goal gave the Pirates a 2-0 advantage, a score they would win by after ending the match with a staunch second half defensive effort.
“Today, I thought he was by and far the best player on the field,” Seton Hall Head Coach Andreas Lindberg said of Tibbling.
The goal gave the Pirates a 2-0 advantage, a score they would win by after ending the match with a staunch second half defensive effort. Andreas Nota made two saves, and was helped out on the defensive backline by fellow newcomers David Arvidsson and Love Frederiksson, both of which hail from coach Lindberg’s homeland of Sweden.
Tibbling also comes from Sweden, as Lindberg’s recruiting efforts this offseason focused primarily on bringing some international flavor into the program. So far, it has paid off.
Tibbling’s two goals gives him five on the season, good enough to be in a tie for second in the Big East in that category. Moving forward for this young Pirates team, the message it simple: stay focused and confident in one another.
““If we buy in, and everybody’s on the same page… regardless of if we concede a goal and stay with it, we can beat anybody on any given day,” Lindberg said.
The Pirates will try and take that mindset into Tuesday’s matchup on the road against tri-state rival Fordham. The match kicks off a three-game road trip for the Pirates before returning to South Orange on Oct. 12 against Providence.
